Abstract:

Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) is used in surgical procedures such as rotator cuff repair, Achilles tendon repair and anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction as an aid of treatment for healings of bone and cartilage as well as chronic inflammation of tendon. It has been mentioned in many literatures that white blood cells play an important role in the efficacy of PRP. In the treatment of osteoarthritis, increasing white blood cell concentration can promote the expression of inflammatory factors and cell death, thus affecting the therapeutic effect. Reducing white blood cell concentration is more conducive to the recovery treatment of osteoarthritis patients. In the treatment of tendon diseases, increasing the concentration of white blood cells is more conducive to the treatment of acute tendon diseases, and reducing the concentration of white blood cells is more conducive to the treatment of chronic tendon diseases. In terms of wound healing, increasing white blood cell concentration has stronger antibacterial effect and is also more conducive to wound healing, while decreasing white blood cell concentration may lead to wound infection and thus affect the healing effect. This paper reviewed the current literatures about the effects of leukocyte content on PRP in the treatment of bones, joints and soft tissue injuries.
