Efficacy of continuous compressed cold therapy following total knee arthroplasty

Abstract:

Objective

To evaluate the efficacy of continuous compressed cold therapy post total knee arthroplasty.

Methods

A total of 100 patients after total knee arthroplasty in The First Affiliated Hospital of Guangzhou Medical University were selected and randomly divided into an observation group and a control group with 50 cases in each group. The observation group was given continuous compressed cold therapy with a self-made compression cold therapy bag; the control group used traditional cold therapy. The visual analogue scale (VAS) and the analgesics taking were also compared between the two groups before and after the cold treatment at six, 12, 24, 48, and 72 h by variance analysis and bilateral t-test.

Results

The pain scores at six, 12, 24, 48, and 72 h after the operation were lower in the observation group than those in the control group (F=22.0, 22.6, 20.5, 19.5, 18.6, all P<0.001). The frequency of analgesics taking 72 h after the surgery in the observation group was lower than that in the control group (t=9.61, P<0.001).

Conclusion

Post total knee arthroplasty, the analgesic effect of continuous compressed cold therapy with self-made compression and continuous cold therapy bag is better than that of traditional ice pack, which reduces the use of analgesic drugs.
