Abstract:

Total hip arthroplasty (THA) is the main surgical method for the treatment of end stage hip disease. Considering the abundant distribution of blood vessels, nerves and soft tissues around the hip, the surgical trauma of THA is also severe, thus leading to the massive intraoperative and postoperative bleeding. In order to drain out the postoperative bleeding and reduce the risk of hematoma formation within the hip, indwelling drainage has always been a common treatment during the perioperative period. However, in recent years, it has been a controversial issue that whether the drainage tube should be routinely placed after THA. There is still no consensus concerning the management of postoperative drainage. This review summarized the related issues of drainage placement after THA in order to provide experience for perioperative drainage management of THA.
