Abstract:

Objective

To study the relationship between the timing of anti-osteoporosis treatment and knee function recovery after surgery for elderly Schatzker type Ⅱ tibial plateau fractures.

Methods

Prospective analysis of the elderly patients with Schatzker type Ⅱ fractures of the unilateral tibial plateau who underwent surgery in Gansu Provincial People’s Hospital from January 2017 to January 2018. According to the timing of oral administration of alendronate against osteoporosis, it was divided into one week after operation group and three months after operation group. Comparison of knee injury and osteoarthritis outcome score (KOOS) in two groups after discontinuation of alendronate for three months were taken.

Results

A total of 33 patients were enrolled in the study. Nineteen patients received oral alendronate within one week after surgery and 14 patients started oral alendronate three months after surgery. The median of KOOS overall scores in the two groups were 87 (82, 89), 63 (56, 66), respectively, and Mann-Whitney U test P<0.05 indicating that the difference of knee function recovery was statistically significant.

Conclusion

In the elderly Schatzker type Ⅱ tibial plateau fracture, the knee joint function recovered after oral administration of alendronate for within one week postoperative is better than that of three months after surgery.
