Abstract:

Surgical site infection (SSI) is a catastrophic complication of artificial joint replacement. Various disinfectants, including povidone-iodine, play an important role in preventing SSI after artificial joint replacement. This review analyzed multiple application methods of povidone-iodine in the prevention of surgical site infections in clinical practice, especially joint surgery. It discussed the different use of methods applying povidone-iodine in the replacement of artificial joints on the effectiveness and the safety. At present, clinicians rely more on the experience than guideline for the use of povidone-iodine in bone or joint surgery. However, it will undoubtedly increases the risk of SSI in a evidence-based medicine era. In order to find the best way to use povidone-iodine, further research is of the essence.
